Diabetes, Distress, and Depression: Incorporating the Emotional Side of Diabetes Into Clinical Care
Start Date: May 20, 2014
End Date: May 20, 2014
National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) webinar
1:00 pm EDT 2:30 pm EDT
Diabetes and depression have been associated with poor self-management behavior and poor clinical outcomes. However many unanswered questions remain about the links between diabetes and depression, leaving diabetes educators and clinicians struggling to find effective strategies to address these issues in their practices. What if our symptom-based approach to diagnosing depression in people with diabetes is too narrow?
Dr. Lawrence Fisher invites clinicians to consider the broader construct of emotional distress which takes into account the context of living with diabetes including its management, other life stresses, and other contributors that can impact emotional well-being.
This webinar will focus on diabetes, distress, and depression where Dr. Fisher will explore the construct of emotional distress, and suggest strategies for integrating the emotional side of diabetes into regular diabetes care. This approach can reduce confusion between depression and distress so that appropriate and targeted patient-centered interventions can occur.
