Substance use disorder treatment often falls into one of two broad categories: abstinence-based or medication-assisted treatment. Unfortunately, the decision to guide a client to one or the other approach is not always based on current scientific evidence. This session will present current advances in differential therapeutics (which treatment to use for different clients), scientific advances in medication therapy and science-based monitoring as considerations in selecting SUD treatment for individual clients in order to optimize outcomes.
- Define the concept of "differential therapeutics"
- Apply an evidenced-based approach to differential therapeutics in the treatment of substance abuse
- Identify the gaps in knowledge that limit the evidence-based approach to differential therapeutics in substance abuse
