Time: 2:00 pm -- 3:30 pm ET

Central Rockies ATTC, Northwest ATTC, Pacific Southwest ATTC, and the Western States Node of the NIDA Clinical Trials Network webinar

Presenter:
Jason Burrow-Sánchez, PhD, Central Rockies Addiction Technology Transfer Center, Department of Educational Psychology, University of Utah

Overview: The development and testing of culturally adapted treatments has become more prominent over the past two decades. This growing interest has been driven by the need to provide more culturally relevant treatments to individuals from racial and ethnic minority groups. Further, the treatment needs for ethnic minority adolescents should be considered within a developmental context. This webinar will provide participants with an overview of theory and empirical research on the cultural adaptation of psychological treatments for racial and ethnic minority adolescents with emphasis on substance abuse treatments. Specific topics to be covered include theoretical models of cultural adaptation, outcomes and benefits of adapted versus non-adapted treatments, and practical applications of adapted treatments.

Learning Objectives (Emphasis will be placed on substance abuse treatments):

  1. Participants will gain an understanding of selected theories and models for cultural adaptation.
  2. Participants will understand the differences between adapted and non-adapted treatments.
  3. Participants will understand the outcomes/benefits of adapted versus non-adapted treatments.
  4. Participants will be exposed to practical applications of adapted treatments based on examples found in the literature.
