End Date: August 20, 2015

Event Details:

Thursday, August 20, 2015 1:00:00 PM EDT - 2:00:00 PM EDT

As hospitals expand their focus on providing equitable care, attention on those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) is critically important. Dr. Makadon, director of the National LGBTI Health Education Center at The Fenway Institute at Fenway Health, works with organizations across the country to create more affirming and inclusive care environments for LGBTI people through research and evaluation, education and training, and public health advocacy. Their mission is to ensure access to high quality, culturally competent medical and mental health care for traditionally underserved communities.

Dr. Knudsen will discuss how Mayo Clinic, through Mayo's Office of Health Equity and Inclusion, is improving care and seeking to better understand the needs of their LGBTI patients. His presentation will highlight the activism and engagement of Mayo's LGBTI employee resource group and how its request for an LGBTI-friendly provider list became a catalyst for organizational change. Dr. Knudsen will illustrate how he and his colleagues focus on aligning the clinical practice with Mayo's broader strategic initiatives to attract and meet the needs of an increasingly diverse patient population.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand more about the specific health needs of LGBTI patients that may not be addressed
  • Learn strategies used by hospitals both in the community and with patients to address disparities of care for LGBTI patients
  • Learn about successes that can improve the care you currently provide
  • Discover the importance of assessing your current approach to LGBTI patients and how to improve culturally competent care
