The ASAM National Practice Guideline for Use of Medications in the Treatment of Addiction Involving Opioid Use was developed to promote evidence-based clinical treatment of opioid use disorder and to assist physicians in the decision-making process for prescribing pharmacotherapies to patients with opioid use disorder.
Methodology: The guideline was developed with support from Treatment Research Institute (TRI) using a modified RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method (RAM), a process that combines scientific evidence and clinical knowledge to determine the appropriateness of a set of clinical procedures. A Guideline Committee comprised of ten experts from multiple disciplines, including internal medicine, addiction medicine, psychiatry, pain medicine and obstetrics/gynecology, reviewed treatment scenarios and assisted in the development and writing of the guideline.
